Please share the beginning of your career journey with us.

My professional journey began in 1988, when I joined a well-known private bank in the United Kingdom as part of its Information Technology Department. Working within a relatively small but highly diversified financial institution proved to be an invaluable foundation for my career. The bank offered a broad range of financial services, which allowed me to gain exposure to multiple business functions, emerging technologies, operational processes, and diverse teams. That early experience gave me a comprehensive understanding of how technology supports business strategy and reinforced the importance of adaptability in an ever-evolving industry.

Over the next two decades, I continued to build my career across several leading financial services organisations, progressively taking on greater leadership responsibilities. This journey ultimately led to my appointment as Head of Software Development for the European subsidiary of a major international bank specialising in outsourcing services. Throughout these years, I developed extensive experience in software development, technology leadership, project delivery, and managing complex business transformations within highly regulated financial environments.

Although I had long considered pursuing an independent consulting career, making the transition to freelancing required careful thought. Like many professionals contemplating entrepreneurship, I questioned whether there would be sufficient opportunities, whether the work would be rewarding, and whether the move would provide long-term stability. After considerable reflection, I made the decision to take that step in late 2007.

Initially, I focused on freelance project management within the financial services sector, leading initiatives that ranged from outsourcing programs and technology implementations to product launches, regulatory change projects, interim management assignments, and large-scale business transformation engagements. These experiences broadened my perspective while allowing me to work with a wide variety of organisations and leadership teams.

As my independent practice continued to grow, I deliberately evolved my career into a diversified portfolio model that combined multiple professional disciplines. Today, my work spans strategic consultancy and project management, board advisory, chair and trustee responsibilities, non-executive directorships, education and professional training, international conference speaking and event hosting, as well as writing and publishing. To date, I have authored five books while also mentoring professionals through one-to-one coaching, sharing the knowledge and experience gained throughout more than three decades of leadership in technology, financial services, and corporate governance.

Looking back, every stage of my career has reinforced one important lesson: continuous learning, embracing change, and remaining open to new opportunities are the foundations of long-term professional success.

What are your long-term goals, and where do you envision yourself in the coming years?

Looking ahead, my long-term goal is to create a lasting impact through my advisory work, board leadership, and contributions to organisational transformation. I want to help organisations become not only high-performing but also resilient, trustworthy, and adaptable in an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving business environment.

I believe sustainable success is built on strong leadership, ethical decision-making, and organisational cultures where people feel empowered to learn, challenge conventional thinking, and innovate with confidence. I aim is to help leaders strengthen these foundations while building governance structures and capabilities that enable organisations to embrace change rather than simply react to it.

As businesses continue to navigate technological disruption, changing market dynamics, and evolving workforce expectations, I hope to support organisations in developing the leadership mindset, strategic clarity, and operational resilience needed to thrive over the long term. I want to help make continuous improvement and adaptability a natural part of how organisations operate.

Ultimately, I hope my legacy will be measured by the leaders I have helped develop, the organisations I have strengthened, and the positive, sustainable change I have enabled. If, in the years ahead, I can look back knowing that I have contributed to building stronger leadership teams, more resilient organisations, and workplaces where people feel both challenged and supported to perform at their very best, I will consider that a truly meaningful achievement.

Who has been the most significant source of inspiration in your life?

Throughout my life and career, I have drawn inspiration from many different sources. Every opportunity to serve my clients, contribute to the success of boards and organisations, and make a meaningful difference has motivated me to continually strive for excellence. Equally important has been my commitment to lifelong learning, constantly developing new skills, expanding my knowledge, and embracing opportunities that challenge me to grow both personally and professionally.

I have also been inspired by the pursuit of new experiences and the willingness to explore different ideas, industries, and perspectives. I believe that innovation and personal growth come from remaining curious, questioning established thinking, and never becoming complacent.

If I had to identify one individual who has had the greatest influence on my thinking, it would be Richard Feynman. His relentless curiosity, intellectual honesty, and passion for understanding how things work have been a constant source of inspiration throughout my career. What I admire most about Feynman is his commitment to continuous learning, his ability to simplify complex ideas, and his willingness to challenge conventional wisdom through critical thinking and evidence.

His philosophy has reinforced values that continue to guide me today: always strive to do the best possible work for clients and organisations, never stop learning and developing, and always remain open to exploring new ideas and opportunities. Those principles have shaped both my professional journey and my approach to leadership, consulting, education, and lifelong personal growth.

What have been your greatest achievements, and what challenges have you encountered throughout your career?

When I reflect on my career, I believe my greatest achievements are not defined by titles or awards but by the trust that clients continue to place in me. Delivering meaningful results, building long-term professional relationships, and consistently providing value through my work have been the accomplishments I value most. Equally rewarding has been the opportunity to maintain a successful portfolio career by continually securing new engagements while remaining committed to personal and professional development. For me, continuous learning and improvement are essential, regardless of experience or expertise.

Like any long career, mine has also presented several rewarding challenges, many of which are closely interconnected.

One of the most significant has been working with people. Every organisation brings together individuals with different personalities, perspectives, and priorities, and navigating those differences is often one of the most demanding aspects of leadership. Over the years, I have learned that strong interpersonal skills, empathy, effective communication, and the ability to build trust are just as important as technical expertise when it comes to achieving successful outcomes.

Another challenge has been working in unfamiliar or rapidly evolving subject areas. No professional can be expected to know every technical detail of every project, particularly as technologies continue to evolve and regulatory environments become increasingly complex. Whenever I encounter gaps in my knowledge, I view them as opportunities to learn rather than obstacles. Whether through formal training, professional literature, industry webinars, conferences, or discussions with subject matter experts, I believe continuous learning is fundamental to remaining effective. Most importantly, I have never been afraid to acknowledge when I do not know something, because asking questions is often the first step toward finding the right solution.

Managing multiple responsibilities has also been an ongoing challenge throughout my portfolio career. Balancing consultancy, board advisory roles, education, speaking engagements, writing, and mentoring requires careful planning and disciplined time management. There are naturally periods of intense activity as well as quieter intervals, making effective prioritisation essential not only for delivering high-quality work but also for maintaining personal wellbeing and avoiding unnecessary stress.

Finally, developing new business is an essential part of any independent consulting career. Unlike traditional employment, freelancing requires continuously building relationships, expanding professional networks, sharing knowledge, and maintaining visibility within the marketplace. Through networking, thought leadership, speaking engagements, webinars, writing, and ongoing professional engagement, I have worked to ensure that my expertise remains relevant while continuing to create opportunities to support new clients and organisations.

Looking back, these experiences have reinforced one important lesson: success is not determined by the absence of challenges but by a willingness to keep learning, adapt to change, build meaningful relationships, and consistently deliver value wherever opportunities arise.
