Torie Smith Dr. h.c. — From Magazine Aspirations to Hospitality Mastery and Self-Discovery
When I graduated from college, I planned to move to Australia and become an editor in the magazine industry. However, for an entire week, every time I stepped into the shower, I received the same intuitive message: “Go live in a ski town before you sit in a cubicle.”
I had already completed all the educational testing required for my visa, but the experience was so clear and persistent that I couldn’t ignore it. I felt compelled to discover what this unexpected side quest was all about.
I called my uncle, who had lived in Vail for decades, and asked if he could help me find a job and a place to live. I told him I would take it from there.
As it turned out, my uncle was personal training the owner of a local bar—the very place where I would go on to work for the next ten years. That bar, along with the people I met there, became a defining part of my life. I fell in love with the community and the hospitality industry, and the experience opened the door to a journey of hospitality mastery, personal growth, and self-discovery.
Those years shaped not only my professional direction but also my understanding of people, connection, service, and the power of meaningful experiences. They simultaneously led me to the love of my life and to the world I know, live, and love today.
Looking back, what initially appeared to be a departure from my original career plan became one of the most important decisions of my life. It taught me to trust my intuition, embrace unexpected opportunities, and remain open to the remarkable paths that unfold when we are willing to listen within.

My greatest sources of inspiration are nature, art, and friendship. Not necessarily in that order, because each holds the same special place in my heart.
I love love. I love the arts, self-expression, and the beautiful uniqueness of people. My love for all that is inspires me every moment of every day.
Mother Nature, relationships, hospitality, being an athlete, and artistic expression are the lifeblood of who I am. They continually remind me to remain curious, connected, creative, and fully engaged with life.
I don’t believe I could name just one person as my greatest inspiration. There are far too many people who have contributed to shaping the person I am today. Each relationship, encounter, lesson, and shared experience has helped chisel out the present-day version of me.
Through every chapter of my life, the Universe and The G.O.D. have been my sanctuary. They have offered me comfort, guidance, and a sense of belonging through both the beautiful and challenging moments.

Torie Smith Dr. h.c. of Torie Smith LLC® — Embracing the Beautiful Challenge of a Multidimensional Life
One of the greatest challenges I have encountered in my career has been finding balance while being a mother, wife, best friend, daughter, sister, artist, athlete, adventurer, scientist, author, creator, and employee—all at the same time.
At one point in my life, I was working five jobs, seven days a week, often working at two different places in a single day. I was also raising two small children, caring for three cats, supporting my husband, building my personal brand, writing articles, participating in podcasts and interviews, creating art, writing a book, managing the household, and running everyday errands.
It was a lot to carry, and there were certainly moments when I felt like my head was spinning in circles. Yet, I genuinely enjoyed every minute of it. Each responsibility, opportunity, and creative pursuit brought its own sense of purpose and fulfillment.
I have been incredibly fortunate to have the most amazing husband, wonderful children, supportive family, and loving friends a person could ask for. They have helped keep me grounded and reminded me that I do not have to navigate every challenge alone.
I have also adored every place I have worked and the people I have met along the way—especially before beginning to work for myself. For me, work has never truly felt like work. It has felt like an opportunity to play, create, connect, and spend time with friends.
I love creating, performing, and providing service. I love being present for my community and offering an open ear and heart to those who need someone to confide in. These experiences have taught me that a meaningful career is not only about professional achievement; it is also about relationships, contribution, joy, and the freedom to express every part of who we are.
The challenge has been learning how to honor all these dimensions of myself without losing balance. My journey continues to remind me that life can be wonderfully full, and that the key is to remain grounded in love, gratitude, creativity, and connection.
