 Jack F. O'Connor'

My career in healthcare began on the front lines as a Cardiovascular Perfusionist. After earning my Bachelor of Science in Perfusion Science from Barry University, I spent the late 1990s and early 2000s working in high-stakes operating rooms with organizations such as Denver Perfusion Services and Total Blood Management. Those years provided me with invaluable clinical experience and a deep understanding of cardiovascular procedures, patient care, and the operational realities of surgical services. Working directly alongside surgical teams gave me a perspective that has continued to influence every leadership role I have held.

As my career progressed, I transitioned into healthcare administration, taking on leadership positions that allowed me to combine my clinical background with operational strategy. I served as Director of Cardiovascular Services at Saint Vincent Health Center and later as Administrative Director at Saint Joseph Health System, where I focused on transforming underperforming programs, standardizing processes, and driving growth across cardiovascular and surgical service lines.

By the 2010s, I was leading major service lines at organizations including leading health systems. During this time, I had the opportunity to develop centers of excellence, implement strategic growth initiatives, and deliver measurable improvements in quality, operational performance, financial margins, and market share. These experiences reinforced my belief that sustainable success in healthcare is achieved by combining clinical excellence with strong leadership, operational discipline, and strategic vision.

Today, as the Founder and Managing Principal of O’Connor Health Solutions, I draw upon that foundation to advise hospitals, health systems, and physician groups across the country. My mission is to help healthcare organizations strengthen performance, improve patient outcomes, and build sustainable strategies that position them for long-term success in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

Could You Highlight the Key Offerings?

At O’Connor Health Solutions, we specialize in helping healthcare organizations strengthen their cardiovascular and neuroscience service lines through strategic planning, operational excellence, and sustainable growth. As a boutique healthcare consulting firm, our focus is on developing customized solutions that improve clinical performance, financial outcomes, and long-term organizational success.

One of our core areas of expertise is cardiovascular and neuroscience service line strategy, where we provide end-to-end support for program development, centers of excellence, hybrid operating suites, and network accreditation, including STEMI, Stroke, and Chest Pain programs. Our goal is to help healthcare organizations build high-performing service lines that deliver exceptional patient care while remaining operationally efficient.

Another key offering is our Physician Leadership Academy, a signature leadership development program designed specifically for physician leaders, department chairs, and medical directors. The program focuses on strengthening leadership capabilities, increasing physician engagement, and improving organizational performance through practical, real-world leadership strategies.

We also work closely with healthcare organizations on supply chain management and cost reduction initiatives, helping reduce clinical variation, consolidate products, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen contribution margins without compromising the quality of patient care.

In addition, we assist hospitals and physician groups with physician co-management agreements, practice optimization, contracting strategies, assessments, and revenue cycle improvements. These initiatives are designed to align physicians and healthcare organizations while improving operational performance and financial sustainability.

Our consulting services also include strategic planning and business development, where we develop multi-year growth strategies, support marketing and physician outreach initiatives, and assist with ambulatory surgery center (ASC) development to position organizations for long-term success.

These services are built upon my experience leading and scaling healthcare programs that generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue while significantly improving contribution margins—from approximately 20–23% to as high as 36–41%. My focus has always been to help healthcare organizations achieve measurable, sustainable results through strategic leadership and operational excellence.

What Are Your Long-Term Goals, and Where Do You Envision Yourself in the Coming Years?

My long-term vision is to help transform the way health systems deliver high-quality, efficient cardiovascular and neuroscience care while addressing the evolving challenges of reimbursement, advancing technology, and workforce development. I believe healthcare organizations must continuously innovate to provide exceptional patient outcomes while maintaining operational and financial sustainability.

As I look to the future, I plan to expand the reach and impact of O’Connor Health Solutions by partnering with more hospitals and healthcare organizations to develop sustainable centers of excellence that deliver measurable clinical and operational results. I am equally committed to developing the next generation of physician leaders through our Physician Leadership Academy, equipping them with the leadership skills needed to navigate today’s increasingly complex healthcare environment.

I also see significant opportunities to drive innovation in emerging areas such as cardio-oncology, structural heart programs, and value-based care, helping healthcare organizations prepare for the future while continuing to improve the quality of patient care.

In the coming years, I envision continuing to consult with healthcare organizations nationwide while expanding my contributions through publications, industry presentations, and speaking engagements focused on service line governance, physician engagement, and supply chain excellence. My ultimate goal is to help create environments where clinical excellence, financial sustainability, and empowered teams thrive together.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of helping healthcare programs achieve national recognition, including Healthgrades Top 5% distinctions and 3-Star STS ratings. Building on that legacy, I remain committed to helping healthcare organizations achieve lasting excellence while creating meaningful impact for patients, physicians, and the communities they serve.

Who Has Been the Most Significant Source of Inspiration in Your Life?

While I have been fortunate to learn from many exceptional mentors and leaders throughout my career, my greatest source of inspiration has always been the patients and frontline clinical teams I have had the privilege of working alongside. From my early days as a cardiovascular perfusionist in the operating room to collaborating with nurses, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams across cardiac service lines, I witnessed firsthand the dedication, resilience, and compassion required to deliver exceptional patient care in high-pressure environments.

Those experiences profoundly shaped my leadership philosophy. They reinforced my belief that effective leadership is not simply about managing operations—it is about empowering people, fostering collaboration, and creating environments where clinical teams can perform at their very best while improving patient outcomes.

Professionally, some of my most valuable lessons came from leading the turnaround of underperforming healthcare programs. Those experiences taught me the importance of strategic focus, data-driven decision-making, and strong collaboration across clinical and administrative teams. These principles continue to guide my work today and form the foundation of the leadership approach I teach through the Physician Leadership Academy, where I help prepare physician leaders to navigate the challenges of today’s evolving healthcare landscape.

 Jack F. O'Connor'

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to receive recognition for both leadership and the measurable impact of the healthcare programs I have led. One of the honors I value most was being selected as one of the Top Five Leaders within the McLeod Health System, recognizing my commitment to operational excellence, strategic leadership, and organizational growth.

I also had the privilege of serving as the Administrative Lead for the inaugural Physician Leadership Academy, helping establish a leadership development initiative designed to strengthen physician engagement and prepare the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Many of the organizations and service lines I have led have achieved significant national recognition for clinical excellence. These accomplishments include earning Healthgrades® Top 5% in the Nation for Cardiology Services and Vascular Surgery, as well as Top 10% in the Nation for Overall Cardiac Services. We also achieved the prestigious 3-Star Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) rating for isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), reflecting exceptional quality and patient outcomes.

In addition, I have led programs that achieved Cycle III Chest Pain Center with PCI Accreditation, established system-wide Stroke and STEMI networks, and developed multiple centers of excellence that improved both clinical quality and patient access to advanced cardiovascular care.

Beyond awards and accreditations, I take great pride in consistently delivering measurable operational results. Throughout my career, I have successfully led healthcare programs that achieved double-digit procedural volume growth while significantly improving financial performance and contribution margins across multiple health systems. For me, these achievements represent the successful combination of clinical excellence, strategic leadership, and a commitment to delivering better outcomes for patients and the organizations we serve.

What Were the Most Challenging Obstacles You’ve Encountered in Your Career?

One of the greatest challenges throughout my career has been leading healthcare organizations through the transition from volume-based care to value-based care while aligning physicians, administrators, and clinical staff across complex, multi-hospital health systems. Successfully integrating service lines, reducing clinical variation, and managing supply chain costs during periods of rapid growth or organizational turnaround required difficult decisions, thoughtful resource allocation, and effective change management.

Another significant challenge has been developing highly specialized programs from the ground up, including Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), MitraClip, neurointerventional services, and robotic surgery. Building these advanced programs involved navigating regulatory requirements, rapidly evolving technologies, reimbursement complexities, and operational demands while maintaining a strong focus on quality and patient outcomes.

Overcoming these challenges required establishing strong governance structures, promoting data transparency, engaging physicians as strategic partners, and maintaining a relentless focus on quality, operational efficiency, and patient flow. These experiences reinforced my belief that sustainable success in healthcare is built on collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement—principles that continue to guide my work today and form the foundation of the consulting services I provide through O’Connor Health Solutions.
