My career journey began with a desire to work as an international lawyer. To pursue that goal, I attended law school in Los Angeles, California, where I developed a strong interest in international legal matters and cross-border issues. Although my family has a background in accounting and many of my relatives work within that profession, I decided to follow a different path and pursue a legal career instead.
After completing law school, I had the opportunity to work internationally in Japan, which provided valuable experience in navigating different legal systems, cultures, and business environments. That experience further strengthened my understanding of the challenges individuals and businesses face when dealing with matters that cross international borders.
A significant turning point came when my family started a business in Hawaii. This opportunity led me to relocate to Honolulu, where I established my own law practice and began serving clients throughout the region.
As I developed my practice, I found myself increasingly drawn to estate planning and probate law. Growing up around my father’s accounting firm, I frequently observed clients seeking guidance regarding their assets, estates, inheritance matters, and long-term financial planning. Many had important questions but lacked a clear plan to protect their families and preserve their legacy.

The demands of day-to-day practice can sometimes make it difficult to step back and focus on long-term goals.
Looking ahead, one of my primary objectives is to continue growing Hongo Law Office by expanding our team and increasing our ability to serve clients more effectively. I would also like to broaden the firm’s services into complementary areas, such as real estate law, allowing us to provide more comprehensive support to our clients.
However, growth is not my only measure of success. More important than expansion is maintaining the quality of service that our clients have come to expect. What Were the Most Challenging Obstacles You’ve Encountered in Your Career?
One of the most significant challenges I have faced throughout my career has been navigating my unique identity. Having moved to the United States as a young teenager, I grew up with both a Japanese and an American identity. While this multicultural background has ultimately become one of my greatest strengths, there were times when it also presented challenges.
Throughout my professional journey, I occasionally encountered comments or assumptions from others regarding my background and my place within the legal profession. While these remarks were not always intended to be hurtful, they sometimes made me feel different because I had come from another country and was building a legal career in the United States. Those experiences were difficult and, at times, discouraging.
However, they also helped shape my resilience and determination. Over time, I learned to focus on my work, my clients, and the value I could bring rather than the opinions of others. Establishing my own law practice gave me the freedom to be authentic, pursue my professional goals on my own terms, and build a career centered around helping others.
One of the most important lessons I have learned is that even when challenges seem overwhelming or impossible to resolve, solutions often emerge with time, persistence, and the support of good people. By remaining patient, thinking carefully, and surrounding yourself with trusted individuals, most obstacles can eventually be overcome.
