Hello Hervé Heully, could you please share the beginning of your career journey with us?
“As a reserve officer and alumnus of the École spéciale militaire (ESM) Inter-Armes de Coëtquidan Saint-Cyr in France, my career began with implementing 3D CAD (computer-aided design) for the French Army’s Buildings and Fortifications Department in the Military Engineering arm. This came after professional internships where I modeled underground cavities using seismic waves, which was both challenging and deeply engaging.
My fascination with Earth and Life Sciences led me to pursue a post-graduate degree in Computer Science applied to Geophysics and the Petroleum Industry, graduating as a Major. This academic path further solidified my love for understanding the unseen and the unknown.
In 1989, I joined Dassault Systèmes, now the world leader in 3D CAD/CAM and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management). Simultaneously, I completed an unsupported three-year Ph.D. focused on “Three-dimensional Representation of Magnetic and Gravimetric Anomalies Buried Underground – Direct and Inverse Phenomena.” Through this work, I leveraged the formalization of the unknown, driven by an unrelenting desire to create knowledge. The algorithms I developed had applications across various domains, uncovering not only what we don’t know but also, intriguingly, what we may wish to conceal.
At Dassault Systèmes, I mastered nearly every aspect of 3D CAD/CAM and traveled the world alongside IBM as the Worldwide Pre-Sales Director for the naval industry at CENIT, IBM’s largest technical partner globally. Together, we made the Dassault Systèmes-IBM consortium the global leader in 3D naval architecture and industry. These 12 years were transformative, sharpening my ability to perceive and navigate between the macroscopic and microscopic, living and non-living, past and future.

In 2009, Hervé Heully achieved the 4th World Prize for Virtual Worlds in London, a recognition that highlighted his pioneering contributions to the field. Earlier, in 2006, he was honored with the Grand Prix of the Swiss-French Chamber of Commerce at the Geneva World Invention Fair for his groundbreaking work in “accelerating know-how through the use of 3D.”

What were the most challenging obstacles you’ve encountered in your career?
“There are no thirty-six answers—it’s about facing the System and its rigors while trying to move quickly enough to prove my point. The System, as I see it, is a construct of legal texts and beliefs, upheld by people who, often unconsciously, act according to their lack of clarity or their enslavement to outdated norms. These individuals and structures represent significant barriers to progress and entrepreneurship.
In my work, which revolves around algorithms and digital innovation, I’ve encountered a divide between what I call the ‘old world’ and the ‘mutants.’ The mutants are those who already understand that the immaterial economy is completely intangible—it’s like applied psychology in many ways. You can’t wait for a problem to manifest or for data to create chaos before taking action.
When it comes to human sciences, we can’t afford to focus solely on observable disturbances. We need to think globally, anticipate, and adopt a ‘Think out of the Box’ mindset to address issues before they escalate. The same applies in my field. It’s about being alert, preventive, and reactive in anticipation of what could go wrong.

My long-term goal is to assist and support the world’s key players in implementing our solutions, ensuring they stay ahead in a constantly evolving digital landscape. I aim to empower the dominant rather than the dominated—that is, those who integrate new developments, not those who somehow avoid them. With New3S, the mission is clear: to serve as the new deterrent in cyberspace, fostering vigilance and anomaly detection to prevent disasters before they happen. In this line of work, anticipation is everything. We need to learn to dominate AI, not the other way around. From the very beginning, 3D was man-made, not AI-made. I believe it should stay that way; otherwise, we’re heading for great dangers.” – Hervé Heully
What advice do you have for the next generation of aspiring leaders?
“My advice is simple: don’t follow blindly. Instead of focusing solely on finding the perfect company at the start of your career, seek out a relevant boss—someone who can truly mentor and challenge you. The right leader can shape your path in ways an ideal company alone cannot.
Develop your instincts and test them rigorously against real-world experiences. Success isn’t just about achieving great milestones; it’s also about learning to navigate challenges, avoid dead ends, and sidestep unnecessary worries. Striking a balance between experience, triumphs, and careful decision-making is key to sustainable growth.
